First Post of Online Freelancing Tips!

This was the first post I wrote on Facebook Groups for online freelancers.

The response was better than I expected. This then led me to create a whole platform, one with the goal of providing free content to help fellow Filipino (and also non-Filipino) freelancers during this unsettling year.

Here’s the post and the first step of this new, exciting, and oh-so fulfilling journey in my life:

Hi, fellow Filipino freelancers. I’m posting my Upwork profile not to flex but to motivate and help new digital freelancers succeed.

Here are some of my top tips as an online freelancer for over 12 years:

– Don’t settle for much less because you live in the Philippines. Instead, always hone your skills, then you can ask for a higher wage.

– Surround yourself with good company, for we truly are the sum of the 5 people we see the most.

– Instead of binge-watching Netflix, follow people who are great at what they do in your field. Watch videos of people like Gary Vaynerchuk (he has a great track record at predicting digital trends). Check out Peter McKinnon if photography is your craft. Google top influencers and follow them diligently.

– Always be learning.

– No matter what online job sector you’re in, learn sales and marketing. And continue to be updated on the latest techniques. You don’t have to buy expensive sales courses. Reading free articles consistently and acting on the tips is enough.

And this goes for those of you who aren’t even working in sales. Why? All of us, without exception, are selling something. You sell yourself at a job interview. You sell yourself on “paper” when applying on Upwork.

– Working online means following the same rules as working offline, as far as relationships go. Make friends. Make many friends. You win people with honey, not vinegar. One contact can lead you to an amazing client. You never know.

– And remember to return favors and give favors without expectations. Don’t worry, karma will do its thing.

– Aim for high-level English skills. This means constant reading, talking in English, and thinking in English. Your income will greatly depend on your English skills.

Good luck and always be grateful for the chance to work online, especially during this wacky year!
